Juba, South Sudan – July 9 As the Republic of South Sudan marks the 15th anniversary of its independence, the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, has conveyed a strong Independence Day message to the country’s leadership, calling for urgent political action to safeguard peace and stability.
In his message, Yakani congratulated the people of South Sudan on the anniversary of independence while urging the national leadership, particularly President Salva Kiir Mayardit, to reflect on the country’s current political realities and the aspirations that inspired independence.
Yakani expressed deep concern that South Sudan is facing a serious political setback driven by individuals and groups who continue to prioritize violence over peaceful dialogue. He stated that the actions of spoilers of peace and stability have undermined the genuine implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) of 2018.
According to Yakani, the continued delays and lack of full commitment to implementing the peace agreement have come at a very high cost. Ordinary citizens continue to bear the greatest burden through the loss of lives, destruction of property.
He appealed to President Salva Kiir Mayardit and all political leaders to place the national interest above political differences and demonstrate genuine commitment to the full implementation of the peace agreement. He stressed that lasting peace, democratic governance, and national unity can only be achieved through political will, accountability, and respect for the commitments made under the peace process.
“As we commemorate 15 years of independence, this should be a moment for honest reflection and renewed commitment to building a peaceful, united, and prosperous South Sudan,” Yakani said. “The people have paid an enormous price for conflict. They deserve peace, security, justice, and opportunities to rebuild their lives.”
He concluded by calling on all parties to reject violence, protect civilians, accelerate the implementation of the peace agreement, and work together to ensure that the sacrifices made for South Sudan’s independence lead to a stable and democratic future for all citizens.
