Beijing and Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, China | 11–24 August 2026
A staff representative of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) represented South Sudan at a 14-day international seminar on poverty reduction and social development organized by the International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC) in Beijing and Gansu Province.
The two-week programme brought together participants from developing countries to exchange knowledge, experiences, policies, and practical approaches to poverty reduction, rural development, social protection, and inclusive development.
The seminar combined classroom-based thematic lectures in Beijing with cultural activities and field visits to Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province, providing participants with an opportunity to learn from China’s experiences in poverty reduction and rural revitalization.
The programme also provided an opportunity for participating countries to present their own experiences and challenges, encouraging South-South knowledge exchange and learning.
Through these sessions, participants gained a broader understanding of how policy frameworks, institutional coordination, investment in rural communities, social assistance, and local economic development can contribute to reducing poverty and improving livelihoods.
Delegates observed county-level coordination involving agriculture, livestock, healthcare institutions, enterprises, and local communities. The visits provided practical insight into how previously vulnerable and relocated communities can be connected to longer-term economic opportunities and public services.
Particular attention was given to the development of local industries and livestock value chains as tools for increasing household income. Participants observed how local resources and distinctive industries can be developed into sustainable economic activities capable of generating employment and improving household livelihoods.
For South Sudan, where communities continue to face challenges related to poverty, limited access to basic services, food insecurity, unemployment, and underdeveloped rural economies, the seminar offered important lessons.
The experience highlighted the importance of developing community-based economic opportunities, strengthening rural institutions, investing in productive sectors, supporting vulnerable groups, and connecting local production to markets.
