Tri-State Conference Addresses Seasonal Cattle Movement and Peace Initiatives in Western Bahr El Ghazal

Western Bahr El Ghazal — A collaborative conference on seasonal cattle movement and peacebuilding, chaired by the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Regional Coordinator Stephen Robo and led by the State Ministry of Local Government and Enforcement across three states, alongside UNMISS, UN agencies, NGOs, and civil society organizations, concluded successfully this week in Western Bahr El Ghazal State.

The three-day event brought together cattle keepers, farmers, and government representatives from Western Bahr El Ghazal, Northern Bahr El Ghazal, and Warrap States to address conflicts arising from seasonal cattle migration and reinforce peace initiatives. The conference was officiated by His Excellency the Governor of Western Bahr El Ghazal State, the Deputy Governor of Warrap State, and the Minister of Local Government of Northern Bahr El Ghazal, who represented his governor.

Stephen Robo Musa, Western Bahr El Ghazal State Coordinator for CEPO, highlighted the importance of the conference in building trust between herders and farming communities. “This conference strengthens relationships and directly addresses challenges tied to cattle movement in agricultural areas,” Musa stated. He noted a marked reduction in violence in recent years, attributing it to sustained dialogue and cooperation.

However, Musa also pointed to unresolved issues, including the prolonged delays in compensating farmers affected by cattle-related damages and the continued presence of firearms among some herders. “Delays in compensation deepen frustrations and hinder reconciliation efforts,” he explained.

The Conference, held under the theme “Strengthening Collective Commitment to Cattle Seasonal Movement Towards Healthy and Better Living for All“.
